In 2014, I moved from Oakland to San Diego for a fresh start. Immediately after relocating I struggled with finding a natural hairstylist which led me to pursue a career in hair. My first 2 years were spent assisting different hairstylists while working at cheap salon chains. None of the salons were ever the right fit given the cultural differences but I persevered. In just 1 year as an independent hairstylist I was able to gain over 700 new curly hair clients.
As a hairstylist and business owner, I know how important it is for black women to have access to high quality professionals in their own community. It’s an ongoing struggle that often leads Black women to resort to temporary solutions.
This is why CurlCousin exists: so that even if someone moves or relocates and finds themselves in an unfamiliar setting, there is still a place tailored to the complexity of black hair culture — one that understands the true beauty of curly hair, educates them on proper care techniques, and provides healing from salon trauma.
