Do you use a curl defining cream in your natural hair regimen? If so, you may want to reconsider. Though it can give your curls some definition and make them appear hydrated, there are several reasons why this product can do more harm than good in the long run. I’m Brittaney Danyel your curl expert and here we will discuss four reasons why you should ditch your curl defining cream immediately.

1. Most of them are not water soluble.

This means that they can be very difficult to wash out, leaving your hair feeling heavy. In addition, buildup from products that are not water soluble can lead to scalp issues.

2. They have ingredients that are too thick to absorb into the hair.

Some of the ingredients often used in curl defining creams, such as beeswax and Shea butter, are simply too thick to penetrate the hair shaft. As a result, they sit on top of the hair and can actually weigh it down, making it appear flat and lifeless. Although this may be listed as the 2nd reason why you should ditch your curl defining cream, it is the most important.

3. It doesn’t give you hold.

If you’re looking for a product that will give your curls definition and hold, a curl defining cream is not the way to go. In fact, because of its moisture-rich formula, a curl defining cream can actually make your curls expand into frizz by the end of the day. This will ultimately cause you to restyle your hair every morning.

4. It dilutes your gel.

If you use a gel in your natural hair regimen, you know how important it is to apply it directly to wet hair. However, if you apply a curl defining cream before your gel, you run the risk of diluting the gel and weakening its hold power. This also leads to wasting your precious products.

Conclusion:

Haircare brands make curl defining creams seem like a godsend for those with naturally curly hair. However, there are several reasons why this product can actually do more harm than good in the long run. From preventing other products from working effectively to weighing down your hair, curl defining creams should be avoided if possible. Have you ditch your curl defining cream?
